The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee breaks new ground as the fifth-generation crossover becomes partially electrified for the first time.

“The Jeep Grand Cherokee is our global flagship and will be leading the Jeep brand into a new era of premium refinement, innovative technology, advanced 4×4 capability and electrification,” said CEO Christian Meunier in a media release. “With a perfect balance of on-road dynamics, 4×4 capability and 4xe performance, the all-new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the most technologically advanced, luxurious and 4×4-capable Grand Cherokee ever.”

Sporting features such as a lower tapered roof, air curtains, and rear vertical pillar spoilers, the vehicle gains newfound aerodynamics. At the same time, combined with a 360-millimetre wider track, chiselled body panels and optional 21-inch wheels, the model almost resembles a baby Wagoneer. The Trailhawk 4xe press loaner wore bright blue tow hooks, blue-accented alloys and a loud matte black-and-blue Trailhawk hood decal, as well.

Further reinforcing the above analogy is the abundance of tech in the interior. Not only does the SUV boast dual 10.1-inch screens (digital cluster and infotainment), but there’s also a 10.25-inch front passenger interactive display where occupants may access apps and view content. Matching blue stitching is found throughout the space.

Having driven the Wrangler 4xe a few times, the powertrain — comprised of the same 2.0-litre turbocharged engine complemented by two electric motors and a 400-volt battery pack — making 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft felt familiar. The ride while in zero emissions mode is eerily quiet, except for an unusual number of beeps and chimes indicating things like a low battery, however the gas mill is noisy when it kicks in.

The 40 kilometres of pure EV range is slightly better than Wrangler’s, though it’s really only designed for short urban trips and backcountry jaunts. Plugged into a regularly household outlet a full top-up takes 12 hours, or 2.5 hours at Level 2. DC fast charging is not supported.

Speaking of off-roading, the green vehicle doesn’t compromise at all in that department. Hiding beneath the surface is a Quadra-Drive II 4×4 system, rear electronic limited-slip differential, up to 2,780 millimetres of ground clearance, all-terrain tires, and much more.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe retails for MSRP $75,040 and is built at the brand’s Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit.
