Almost 30 years to the month later, the most famous fictional plumbers graced the silver screen once again in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. And this week, Nintendo fans are able to own it in their collection with the release of the special “Power Up Edition” released on Digital, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD.
Much more, shall we say, family friendly than the aforementioned live action version, this latest edition stars Mario (somewhat controversially voiced by Chris Pratt), Luigi (Charlie Day), Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Toad, (Keegan-Michael Key), Donkey Kong (Seth Rogan) and Bowser (Jack Black) in the starting lineup.
Though admittedly a bit skeptical at first that Universal Pictures, Illumination and Nintendo could successfully distill the entire universe into a 92-minute animated movie, I was pleasantly surprised. Whether new to the franchise or a die-hard enthusiast like myself, the picture really does have something for everybody.
Through the protagonists’ journey through the Mushroom Kingdom ultimately ending with a showdown against the big, bad Bowser, there are many references to Mario Kart, Luigi’s Mansion and many other beloved video game series. One particularly notable scene is where the blonde-haired Funky Kong rips along a twisty jungle road complete with jumps, banana-peel throwing and kart glider deployment.
The “Power Up Edition” includes lots of fun bonus content like “Getting to Know the Cast” showing exclusive behind-the-scenes footage; “Leveling Up: Making The Super Mario Bros. Movie” providing an in-depth look at how the film was actually put together; and “Leadership Lessons with Anya Taylor-Joy” where the actress playing Princess Peach gives some tips kids of all ages can incorporate in their daily lives.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie “Power Up Edition” is at retailers now. Want to win a free Blu-ray copy? Make sure you’re subscribed and send us a message listing your favourite character in the subject for your chance at a complimentary Blu-ray disc.
