After three movies and two spin-offs, Gru, wife Lucy, their kids and of course the countless frenetic Minions are back at it again in the latest installment of the Illumination series: Despicable Me 4. And as of today, fans can own it on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray and DVD (as well as digital).
The animated film picks up shortly after the events of Despicable Me 3 where Gru (voiced by Steve Carrell) and Lucy Kristen Wiig) are still members of the Anti Villian League (AVL) but are now dealing with a new addition to the family. Baby Gru Jr. makes his first appearance in the franchise, and when he’s not busy tormenting his dad the adorable infant lends a hand squaring off against a new pair of baddies from Gru’s past.
Maxime (played by the hilarious Will Ferrell) and his partner Valentina (Sofia Vergara) are a formidable duo arguably giving the gang their biggest challenge yet. Without giving too much away, here’s a disclaimer: if you aren’t a fan of cockroaches, select scenes might make certain viewers a bit squeamish.
To help even the odds, four hand-picked Minions receive some serious crime-fighting upgrades courtesy of AVL director Silas Ramsbottom (Steve Coogan). However, as expected, this newly-minted Mega Minions team often end up causing even more damage and general trouble than the rest of their un-super-fied little yellow friends — and in hilarious fashion.
Keep watching after the credits for a ton of bonus content. In the “Game Over and Over” short, the mischievous Minions find a special controller in Gru’s lair. One of the yellow creatures uses it to turn another into a real-life video game character and subsequently wreaks havoc on the neighbourhood in pursuit of a high score. Another notable feature is Benny’s Birthday, where Benny finds himself trapped in a Groundhog Day-style time loop subject to the same birthday party shenanigans over and over.
There is also a lot of fun behind-the-scenes content including “Meet the Cast,” “Making Of,” and “Despicable Dialogue” showcasing a hilarious montage of recording booth moments.
