Bring Wicked home today on 4K Ultra HD

Straight from Broadway to the small screen comes the hit musical-turned-movie Wicked. Helmed by director Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians), the picture more than does justice to its beloved source material and is now available in crystal-clear 4K UHD, Blu-Ray and DVD.

This Wizard of Oz prequel might just be perfectly cast with pop songstress Ariana Grande taking on the role of the good witch Glinda, acting opposite Daytime Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award winning Cynthia Erivo playing the green-skinned Elphaba. And, in a perhaps unexpected twist (but not that unexpected given the director), audiences can witness Michelle Yeoh belt out tunes as the headmistress of Shiz University Madame Morrible.

Speaking of the Wizard, Jeff Goldblum doesn’t disappoint as the ruler of Oz, channelling some of his Grandmaster energy seen in Thor: Ragnarok, ruling from atop his magnificent palace in the Emerald City.

The story starts in Munchkinland where Glinda announces the death of the Wicked Witch of the West. What’s nice about the film adaptation — which runs nearly as long as the Broadway version despite only being the first half of a two-part series — is the extra runtime allows for exposition and avoids tunes quickly bleeding into one another. As someone who is fairly new to musicals, this is much appreciated.

Particularly in ultra-high definition, the bright costumes and colourful sets really pop. The CGI is also on point, for example the anthropomorphic animals, highlighted by the goat Doctor Dillamond voiced by Game of Throne’s Peter Dinklage. The introduction of the animals is where Wicked begins to take a darker turn, even amidst all the song and dance, and the theme of discrimination and rejection becomes more prominent.

Viewers can learn more in the bonus features, such as “Making Wicked,” a BTS look at the characters and choreography,” and “The Wonderful Wizard,” where Jeff Goldblum peels back the curtain of production. There’s an alternate sing-along full-length feature as well allowing an interactive way to experience the movie, and plenty of deleted and extended scenes.

You can find Wicked in-stores now and at online retailers like Amazon. Or enter to win a free 4K Ultra HD copy by subscribing to the site and sending us a message with your favourite character in the subject line.
