Chevy’s designed-from-the-ground-up Silverado EV is a case study in how to do an electric utility vehicle right. Rather than rushing something to market, the brand’s first zero-emissions pickup is a worthy entry into the growing segment.
“Chevrolet has been building trucks for nearly 100 years and understands what customers want and need in a pickup,” said Chevrolet vice president Scott Bell in a press release. “Chevy’s truck leadership combined with our expertise in vehicle electrification has given us an advantage to deliver a revolutionary product. The Silverado EV RST has all the performance and capability of a traditional truck, plus all the benefits of electrification.”
The First Edition RST trim looks phenomenal. The sculpted front end serves both an aesthetic and aerodynamic purpose, and the angled C-pillar and slim full-length LED light bar — though overdone in the industry — sets it apart from traditional offerings. The murdered-out trim is badass, too. While I didn’t haul any gear over the week of testing, the five-foot-11-inch bed provides over nine-feet of storage thanks to the available Multi-Flex Midgate. Maximum trailering capacity is rated at 10,00 pounds.
Measuring 5,920 millimetres long and 2,394 millimetres wide, the Silverado EV is not small by any means. However, all the onboard sensors make city maneuvering and parking tolerable, and the interior is ultra-spacious boasting a wide second row bench easily fitting three occupants with a car seat installed.
Fully loaded (and for the $117,599 price tag, it should be), the interior features a massive 17.7-inch infotainment display, 11-inch digital instrument cluster, 14-inch head-up display, fixed glass roof and more.
Despite the dual-motor setup outputting a whopping 754 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque, the pickup is remarkable comfortable to drive. Four-wheel steer and adaptive air suspension is standard, and the 205-kilowatt-hour battery pack yields a reported 708-kilometre range on a single charge. DC fast charging is supported up to 350 kilowatts.
The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado First Edition RST is limited to 500 units in Canada.
