The Chevrolet Silverado EV may be getting most of the attention right now, but that doesn’t take away from the continued capability of the fourth-generation gasoline-powered 1500 pickup.
There’s not much new to report for the 2025 model, other than the addition of two paint colours: Cypress Grey and Riptide Blue Metallic.
Aesthetically the full-size truck retains all the elements from the 2022 refresh, such as the updated headlights, grille and more pronounced wing-shaped daytime running lights (LT trim and above) featuring an animated light sequence activating when the driver approaches, starts or walks away from the vehicle.
Opting for the Z71 Off-Road and Protection Package (+ 1,580) bundles heavy-duty skid plates, dual-outlet exhaust, spray-on bedliner, 18-inch alloys and performance-enhancing goodies like hill descent control and specialty suspension, among others.
Inside our RST crew cab press loaner the larger Google built-in-powered 13.4-inch infotainment display stands out, complemented by the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. A good balance of virtual and controls are present, and users can still adjust volume and climate controls via knobs and buttons rather than diving into layers of on-screen sub-menus.
The 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat was supportive and comfortable and though the interior design is a little spartan the cabin has all the basics covered including ample room for all passengers.
Part of the appeal of the Silverado has always been lots of choice to suit different buyer needs. Nothing has changed here as a 2.7-litre turbocharged four cylinder, 5.3-litre or 6.2-litre V8 and 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine are all available. I tested the latter variant (+ $4,190 over the base 2.7) mated to a 10-speed automatic gearbox that, with 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, boasted a lot of low-end grunt with a nice diesel purr to boot.
Several onboard cameras make parking and towing the large pickup an easier task than expected. An optional max tow package ups the total capacity to 13,300 pounds (two-wheel drive).
A next-gen Silverado is on its way, rumoured for a 2027 model year launch.
