Full disclosure: after watching the first Jurassic World released 10 years ago (!) now, and leaving feeling pretty underwhelmed, I’ve been pretty checked out of the series. However, the latest Jurassic World Rebirth has pulled me back in and I’m glad it did as it breathes some much-needed new life into the franchise.
The latest flick is what’s often referred to as a “soft reboot.” That is, the previous films are canon, however Chris Pratt and the rest of the previous cast are out and the focus is put on a new group of A-list actors. The new gang includes Scarlett Johansson, playing the former military operative turned hired gun Zora Bennet, seeking one last payday, and Mahershala Ali as fellow mercenary Duncan Kincaid. Jonathan Bailey, fresh off of Wicked,” also does a great job portraying wide-eyed palaeontologist Dr. Henry Loomis.
As a big fan of the original 1993 movie, I appreciated the many call-backs to Jurassic Park from the remixed OG score to a scene involving innocent-looking tiny dilophorosaurus’ — reminiscent of the ones that cornered the ill-fated computer programmer Dennis Nedry (Wayne Knight).
Speaking of which, there’s a welcome return to horror-esque elements throughout the picture. This is particularly true in the latter half when the crew, joined by a family that accidentally gets swept up into the adventure, find themselves on another previously InGen-inhabited island and hunted by a genetically-altered mega mutant T. rex and other assorted predators.
Fans can catch all the action from the comfort of their own home as the film has just released on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD. Packed with bonus features, viewers get access to behind-the-scenes content like “Off the Deep End,” which looks at special technology used in capturing the open ocean sequences; “Trekking Through Thailand” where the cast and crew share their experiences shooting on location in exotic jungles, beaches and tall grass fields; and much more.
Jurassic World Rebirth is in-stores now and at online retailers like Amazon. Or enter for a chance to win a free 4K Ultra HD copy by subscribing to the site and sending us a message with your favourite dinosaur in the subject line. Thanks for reading and good luck!
