There’s great news for fans who missed seeing the conclusion to Wicked on the big screen, or just want relive the epic ending to the story of the witches of Oz — Wicked: For Good drops on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD today.
Now in full control of her powers and, branded The Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) is living in hiding while carrying out her mission to expose The Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) as a fraud and seek justice for the oppressed animals. On the flipside, Glinda continues to be manipulated by the unscrupulous Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) to spread the administration’s propaganda throughout the land.
The overall heavier tone and subject matter tackled in the sequel is contrasted by the spectacular visuals and fun little numbers performed throughout the movie, though admittedly at times the sudden outbreak into song and dance can feel a bit jarring during a tense dramatic moment — like when The Wizard faces a surprise confrontation at the Royal Palace.
It’s a treat to see more ties to the original Wizard of Oz picture/novel materialize, like the Yellow Brick Road and a special visit by a certain pigtailed character in a blue and white dress, serving as a lead-in to the 1939 silver screen classic.
In addition, the physical release keeps the good times rolling after the end credits with exclusives for musical lovers. There’s a sing-along full-length version of the film, deleted scenes that include a montage of the Munchkins shaping and painting gold bricks, and a segment showing the citizens of Oz staging a celebration to send off Glinda as she heads for Emerald City.
And of course, what kind of bonus features would it be without some behind-the scenes content? “Making Wicked: For Good” shows special footage and interviews with cast and crew; “The True Wizard” explores why Jon M. Chu was the chosen one to direct the stage-to-screen production; and “The Girl in the Bubble” provides a closer look at Glinda’s new song; and much more.
