Flying High Again sends audiences soaring

Though already 28 films in, extreme sports media company Teton Gravity Research (TGR) doesn’t disappoint with the release of its latest project Flying High Again.

A collaboration between TGR and Standard Films, the latter founded by big mountain snowboarding-pioneer slash auteur Mike Hatchett, the picture is chock full of breathtaking visuals captured on location in places such as Jackson Hole, Palisades Tahoe, and the Sierra Mountains during the record-breaking snowfall of the 2022-23 season.

“The original goal was to make the best snowboard film we could, and really focus on the athletes being the stars,” said Hatchett in a news release. “We wanted to make a rider-based movie and let the athletes do the talking. It is a mix of freestyle and big-mountain riding.”

The roster of aforementioned stars is deep and includes pro boarders Bode Merrill, John Jackson and Finnish X Games champion Antti Autti who breaks up the action with a few laughs in a funny segment during the 80-minute showing. Flying High Again is a little less narrative-driven then some previous TGR features but still boasts a killer soundtrack designed to get the blood pumping.

Whether viewers are avid enthusiasts of the sport or just casuals, the spectacular footage of the cast weaving high-speed through trees in the backcountry or helicopter dropping onto a sheer, untouched mountain face should wow everyone equally. My personal favourite was the urban riding scenes making an otherwise pedestrian-looking snowy residential street look like a fully-equipped terrain park.

Hatchett met TGR co-founders Todd and Steve Jones in Alaska in 1995 and have worked together on numerous occasions since — for example, putting together the Emmy-nominated originally television series Higher TV — something that really translates onscreen.

Flying High Again premiered in Reno, Nevada and is currently touring throughout Canada and the US with a final screening being held in Largo, FL on Dec. 7. Visit www.tetongravity.com/films/flying-high-again for the full schedule.
