Oppenheimer redefines biographical thriller genre

Touted on the cover as “One of the best movies of the century” as per famed film critic Richard Roeper, Oppenheimer has some big shoes to fill. But this biographical thriller surpasses all expectations and then some — and now it’s available to own on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and digital.

The fact that Christopher Nolan is responsible for the project is already a good indicator of quality (and thankfully there’s no muffled audio or excessive brain-busting a la 2020’s Tenet). Though running three hours long the juggernaut of a period piece — largely based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning 2005 book American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin — doesn’t feel like it thanks to the perfect pacing, jaw-dropping visual effects and of course the brilliant performance of one Cillian Murphy (playing the titular J. Robert Oppenheimer) and company.

Even for those who aren’t well versed on the subject of the Manhattan Project and/or World War II, the movie does a great job of filling in historical details without being overly preachy or boring. The story follows Oppenheimer from the time he’s a young man in school, to the years spent developing the atomic bomb and then having to face the subsequent, ahem, fallout of his actions.

Though best digested in IMAX 70mm, 4K Ultra HD is the next best thing capturing all the many extreme closeups and fiery explosions in crystal-clear quality on compatible TVs. And after finishing the masterpiece, yet another three hours of special features awaits: In “The Luminaries” the cast discusses how they weaved real-life figures into their characters; “The Devil of Details” features production designer Ruth De Jong explaining how the entire town of Los Alamos was recreated, period-accurate, using props and spectacular sets; and much more.
