A Mustang in an elevator?

That’s what Ford is hoping to accomplish in order to get a 2015 convertible version of their popular sports car on display on the observation deck at the Empire State Building in New York from April 16 to 17.

This non-easy feat is to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the Ford Mustang that debuted in 1964 at the World’s Fair in the Big Apple, where a prototype 1965 Mustang was also perched high above the city after being sliced in three sections, transported up the elevators and reassembled.  It was an easier task then, as the modern iteration is almost seven inches longer and four inches wider than its predecessor.

“Our team is measuring twice and cutting once to make sure we can get this Mustang up in the elevators,” said Ford engineer Dave Pericak in a news release. “Like the team that did this in 1965, the current crew visited the Empire State Building before starting and took careful measurements of its new elevators and doors before cutting up the car.”

This mode of transport is necessary because no portable crane can reach the 86th floor observatory, and the narrow space rules out delivery by helicopter. The new Mustang convertible will be available for viewing on April 16 and 17 from 8 a.m. until 2 a.m.
