Did you know there are numerous species of the agave plant, some of which are used in the creation of delicious tequilas and mezcals? Vancouverites will have a chance to sample some of the finest examples of both Mexican liquors at the upcoming Vancouver International Tequila Expo (VITE) Grand Tasting on May 30.
This is the fourth year of the event, aimed at increasing awareness around quality tequila and mezcal in Western Canada. The segment is growing rapidly, with nearly $26 million in sales in B.C. last year, much of that coming from the premium category.
On April 28, VITE held a preview on the rooftop of Joe Fortes Seafood & Chophouse for industry representatives and media, where guests were able to sample some of products that will be exhibited at the Grand Tasting.
Some standouts include the Gran Cava de Oro Plata, made with 100 per cent blue weber agave and bottled in Mexico, Hornitos Black Barrel, a triple-aged añejo tequila, and the Tequila Herradura Reposado, an oak-rested drink with company roots dating back over 100 years.
As part of Vancouver Agave Week, there will also be seminars, master classes and paired dinners leading up to the main event. You can find more information on the VITE website.
