Minions return in Rise of Gru now on 4K UHD

It took a while, but the lovable yellow oblong characters are back in the fifth installment of the Despicable Me franchise. Illumination’s Minions: The Rise of Gru, tells the origin tale of how Gru and his, well, minions, rose to villainous fame. And it’s out now on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD.

Set in 1976 San Francisco, the film pays a lot of homage to movies and music from decades past like vintage kung fu flicks and disco tunes. Though this will probably go over the heads of the children watching, they may not notice as action comes fast, furious and often.

One of the best scenes is a masterfully-choreographed fight sequence starring a martial-arts-master-turned-acupuncturist voiced by Michelle Yeoh. Speaking of which, the cast is absolutely packed with stars including Steve Carrell playing 12-year-old Gru, and a bunch of familiar names bringing the bad guy supergroup the Vicious 6 to life: Belle Bottom (Taraji P. Henson), Jean Clawed (Jean-Claude Van Damme), Nunchuck (Lucy Lawless), Svengeance (Dolph Lundgren) and Stronghold (Danny Trejo) as well as former leader Wild Knuckles (Alan Arkin).

Though the plot tends to wander, the main storyline involves Gru stealing something that the Vicious 6 needs for world domination, and his teaming up primarily with Wild Knuckles and four Minions to stay one step ahead. As expected, the incomprehensible creatures adorably bumble their way to success throughout the picture via physical comedy and gags of the low-brow variety (i.e., animated mooning).

The discs pack over 60 minutes of bonus features such as two mini-movies — “Post Modern Minions” follows two Minions who sneak into a 70s post-modern art gallery and accidentally create a new masterpiece; and “Minions and Monsters” lets viewers join in on the fun as four Minions take on a fantasy role-playing game. There’s also extended scenes, outtakes, behind the scenes content and more.
