Got a sweet tooth? Then you would have loved the Tasting Plates Vancouver food tour earlier this week that highlighted one of the Lower Mainland’s trendiest neighbourhoods: Yaletown.
For those not familiar with the event, which visits a different area of town each time, participating establishments provide special tasting menus for patrons who are part of the tour.
This time, dessert was heavily featured with about half the places specializing in cakes, chocolates and other treats. The evening started with a long line up of people at Bella Gelateria (1089 Marinaside Cres.) waiting to register and receive their tasting cards needed for access to the different venues.
Bella was also the first food stop, offering three items: a sourdough bruschetta topped with local cherry tomatoes, basil and an olive tapenade, a deliciously soft and gooey margherita pizza with Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and a tiramisu paired with gelato.
Other interesting dishes along the way: the simultaneously sweet and savoury BTO Bacon, Tomato and Olive chocolate at XOXOLAT (1271 Homer St., and it’s pronounced sho-sho-la), the light and tangy blanc fraisier cake with a surprise strawberry in the middle from Ganache Patisserie (1262 Homer St.) and the refreshingly healthy organic juice taster, served in a branded miniature mason jar, full of kale, spinach, parsley and other green goodness from Krokodile Pear (518 Davie St.)
The lone dinner location was Romer’s Burger Bar (1039 Mainland St.) Customers were given a surprise plate comprised of samplers chosen by the chef. We ended up with two pulled pork sliders, tender jerk chicken skewers, alder salt popcorn, spicy chicken wings drenched in hot sauce, pickles sprinkled with chilli flakes and freshly fried “Jimmy’s” potato chips.
One of the benefits of having the tour in Yaletown is that all businesses were within easily walkable distances, in contrast to previous events that required some alternative mode of transport. The next Tasting Plates will be a coffee crawl on Nov. 22. Visit vancouverfoodsterevents.com for more information.
