Ashanti returns in Build-A-Bear feature film Honey Girls

Ashanti fans rejoice — the multi-platinum singer/songwriter is headlining again, this time as an actress in the feature film Honey Girls released today on digital and DVD.

In a case of art-imitating life, Ashanti plays pop star Fancy G — who kicks the movie off starring in an original music video called “Diamonds” — who is on a quest to find the “next big thing” via hosting a national talent competition. Unbeknowst to her, three of the competitors secretly form a group called Honey Girls, donning costume-ball-esque masks to hide their identities, and produce a viral hit.

Bandmates Charlie (played by Ava Grace), Maya (Aliyah Mastin) and Alex (Frankie McNellis) are convincing in their roles as up-and-coming divas. Bolstering their talent is director Trey Fanjoy’s vision, making his directorial debut here, as well as Grammy Award winning composer Mark Nilan Jr. and music supervisor Julia Michels, both of whom worked on 2018’s A Star is Born soundtrack and contributed to the five original songs in this picture.

If the title looks familiar, perhaps you’ve seen the Build-A-Bear Honey Girls line of stuffed animals. The story is based upon the collection and fans can head to the nearest workshop or website to bring home a furry friend and accessories. In addition, check out the brand’s YouTube channel to rewatch Ashanti’s and the rest of the cast’s performances, or stream all the tracks on a number of popular services.

Pick up the Honey Girls Movie Night Box for the ultimate night in. Includes microwave popcorn, candy, a bunch of exclusive merch and even a coupon to create your own above stuffie. The DVD is available now at major retailers like Amazon and Best Buy.
